Kenya Yara Estate Microlot

Blackcurrant · Red plum · Orange zest · Brown-sugar sweetness · Clean black-tea finish · Medium roast

Last month's Sumatra was all deep, earthy body. This month we've swung the other way — and gone up a tier. A single-estate microlot from Yara Estate, grown at around 1,732 metres in the Kiambu highlands north of Nairobi, on deep red volcanic soil. The classic Kenyan trio — SL28, SL34 and Ruiru 11 — hand-picked, washed the traditional way, then dried slowly on raised beds. Bright, juicy and fruit-forward. Where the Sumatra had weight and grip, this one has sparkle. Roasted to order in NSW, this month only.

Why these beans

Specialty coffee, roasted the cleaner way.

Air-roasting removes the chaff that creates bitterness, so you taste more of the bean and less of the burn.

Air-roasted, not drum-roasted

Removes the bitter chaff layer for a smoother, less acidic cup.

Ground to order

Choose Whole Beans, Espresso, Stovetop, Aeropress, Filter, Cold Brew or Plunger.

First time here?

Australian specialty coffee, roasted to order in NSW.

Grounded Drops started in a garage in southwest Sydney, roasting specialty coffee for tradies who didn't have time for a cafe stop. We discovered Japanese drip bag technology - real specialty coffee in a paper filter, ready in minutes - and never looked back.

Today we still roast in NSW, freshly to order, and pack by hand. Same care, same beans, same quirky little setup.

Common questions

Frequently asked

What's the difference between air-roasted and drum-roasted?

Drum-roasting tumbles beans together with their chaff (the dry outer husk). The chaff burns and creates bitterness, acidity, and the harsh stomach feeling some coffees have. Air-roasting suspends the beans in hot air and removes the chaff during roasting - cleaner taste, smoother finish, less stomach upset.

Which grind should I pick?

Whole Beans if you have a grinder at home (freshest). Otherwise pick by your brew method: Espresso for machines, Stovetop for moka pots, Aeropress, Filter for pour-over or drip machines, Cold Brew for slow extraction, Plunger for French press.

How fresh are the beans?

Roasted, ground and packed to order at our facility in NSW, Australia - never warehoused. Most orders leave us within a couple of business days, a little longer in busy periods. We don't pre-grind - your grind happens on the day we pack.

Can I subscribe to the Roast of the Month?

Not right now, and it comes down to supply. Each Roast of the Month is a small, one-off lot — we can't always get enough of it to guarantee it lands in your box every month, and we'd rather not promise a delivery we can't fill.

Our core blends (Wayfarer, Nemophilist, Hodophile, Gadabout and Bunji) are on Subscribe & Save — 30% off and free shipping — because we can keep those in steady supply. If we can get a consistent supply behind the Roast of the Month down the track, we'll put it on a subscription plan too.

Why is Bunji more expensive than the others?

Bunji is small-batch Australian-grown coffee from Far North Queensland. Australian coffee production is tiny and the labour costs more than overseas origins - that's reflected in the price. You're drinking some of the rarest coffee in the world: coffee grown at home.
