Indonesia Blue Batak

Dark chocolate · Molasses · Cedar · Sweet tobacco · Full syrupy body · Dark roast

We have never released a dark roast. This is our first.

Blue Batak grows in the Lintong highlands on the southern edge of Lake Toba, North Sumatra — named for the Batak people whose land it is. The name is literal: the beans arrive with a blue-green cast, the mark of Sumatra's wet-hulling, where the coffee is hulled while still damp and finished by hand in the sun. That is why a Sumatran cup drinks the way it does — heavy, syrupy, low in acid, more savoury than sweet.

We have taken it darker than anything we have ever put in a bag. Dark chocolate and molasses up front, cedar and sweet tobacco underneath, and a body you can almost chew.

It is not a bright coffee. If you want fruit and sparkle, this is not your month.

First time here?

Australian specialty coffee, roasted to order in NSW.

Grounded Drops started in a garage in southwest Sydney, roasting specialty coffee for tradies who didn't have time for a cafe stop. We discovered Japanese drip bag technology - real specialty coffee in a paper filter, ready in minutes - and never looked back.

Today we still roast in NSW, freshly to order, and pack by hand. Same care, same beans, same quirky little setup.

How drip bags work

Real coffee, no machine. Five steps.

Drip bags aren't instant coffee. They're real ground specialty coffee in a paper filter - the exact same brewing method as a pour-over, just held by your mug instead of a stand.

1 Open the top

Open the top

Tear the top off along the OPEN HERE strip.

2 Open the wings

Open the wings

Fold the two paper side wings outward.

3 Hang it on your mug

Hang it on your mug

Rest the wings over the rim. Wide mug? Push the handles together for a firmer hinge.

4 Pour

Pour

Bloom with a splash (about 30ml), wait 30 seconds, then pour to the top and let it filter through. Repeat to taste.

5 Enjoy

Enjoy

Lift the bag out, add milk if you like, and enjoy.

Two pours through the bag makes a strong cup - that's your baseline. Want it stronger? Use a little less water. Want it milder? Add a splash more. Your cup, your call.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How does each drip bag work?

Tear, hang on your mug, pour hot water - twice. Strong, smooth, full-flavour coffee in minutes. No machine, no plunger, no mess.

How many cups per bag?

One. Each bag holds about 14g of coffee for one cup - use a little less water for a stronger cup, a little more for a milder one.

How fresh is the coffee?

Roasted and packed to order at our facility in NSW, Australia - never warehoused. Most orders leave us within a couple of business days, a little longer in busy periods.

What's shipping?

$9.95 flat rate Australia-wide. Free shipping on orders over $80. Most orders go with Aramex (tracked). Delivering to a PO box or parcel locker? Choose Australia Post at checkout.

Can I subscribe to the Roast of the Month?

No — the Roast of the Month is a one-off. It's a different small-batch coffee every month, so it isn't part of our subscription. Subscribe & Save covers our core blends: Wayfarer, Nemophilist, Hodophile, Gadabout and Bunji.
