Should You Give a Coffee Gift Card or Coffee for Christmas?

Give coffee for Christmas when you want something to hand over and you either know how they brew or can give drip bags, which only need a cup and hot water. Give a gift card when their brewer, grind, roast preference or decaf choice is unknown, or when you're short on time or they live far away.

Our family started roasting coffee in our garage in 2014. We founded Grounded Drops in 2018 with drip bags, and we roast to order in NSW, with the roast date on every label. Here's how I'd choose between a gift card and a coffee present for one person I care about.

What do you need to know before you choose?

Ask about their brewer or grinder, whether they drink milk coffee or black, and whether they want decaf. Then decide whether you need a physical present for them to unwrap.

You can keep the questions casual: “What do you make your coffee with at home?” tells you more than “Do you like coffee?” If they buy ground coffee, ask which grind they normally order. If they use their own grinder, Whole Beans leaves that part to them.

Milk or black helps narrow the coffee choice, but it doesn't tell you their preferred roast. Decaf is a separate question worth asking before you buy a selection. If you'd rather keep the surprise and can't find those answers, a gift card gives them the choice.

Drip bags remove the brewer and grind decision. They don't remove personal taste. For broader present ideas, our coffee gift ideas guide covers other ways to choose; here we're weighing a physical coffee present against leaving the order to them.

Buying for a team or clients instead? Our corporate Christmas coffee gifts guide covers that.

How do a gift card and physical coffee compare?

A gift card leaves the coffee order to the recipient; physical coffee means you choose it before giving it. Use the table to see which decisions you're comfortable making.

Choosing one personal Christmas coffee present
Your decision Gift card Drip bags: Travel Packs or Pantry bags Coffee beans Sample Box
What they need to brew Depends on the coffee they choose A cup and hot water A suitable brewer; a grinder for Whole Beans A cup and hot water
What you need to know No brewing details needed Coffee preference; use at home or away; decaf is in Pantry bags only Brewer or grinder, preferred coffee and suitable grind They'd like to try the three included roasts; no decaf included
Something to unwrap? You can print it or write it into a card A physical coffee pack A physical coffee bag A physical coffee selection
How it reaches them Email to you or the recipient Parcel delivery, then your handover if planned Parcel delivery, then your handover if planned Parcel delivery, then your handover if planned
Who chooses the coffee or grind? The recipient when ordering You choose the coffee; no grind selection You choose the coffee and Whole Beans or ground The included selection is fixed
When I'd choose it Unknown preferences or distance Coffee without a brewer decision A known brewing setup Someone interested in trying a few roasts

How does a GD gift card work?

Our gift card is delivered by email with instructions to redeem it at checkout. It has no additional processing fees and no expiry date.

At the time of writing, the six amounts are $25, $50, $100, $200, $500 and $1000. On the product page, choose your own email or the recipient's email, add a message, and use the optional “Send on” date if you'd like to schedule it.

If you want something to hand over, send it to yourself and print it or write it into a Christmas card. A note explaining why you left the coffee choice to them can make it feel considered: “I know you like choosing your own coffee, so this one's yours to pick.”

If you're sending it direct, choose the recipient's email, add your message and set the optional “Send on” date to the day you'd like it sent. That lets you plan the gift without arranging a parcel. They'll follow the redemption instructions in the email when it's time to order.

How do you make a coffee present feel personal?

Choose a format that fits how they use coffee, then add a short note explaining your choice. You don't need to guess a detailed flavour preference to make the present thoughtful.

Our Sample Box contains 21 drip bags: seven each of Wayfarer, Nemophilist and Hodophile, all medium dark. I'd choose it for someone who'd enjoy trying a few coffees rather than being given one roast. Add “Tell me which one you'd buy again” to the card, and share our Sample Box tasting guide for later.

“Gave to hubby for Christmas!! He loves them!!”

Travel Packs suit someone who travels or takes coffee out of the house. Each Travel Pack drip bag is sealed in its own sachet. Choose Wayfarer, Nemophilist or Hodophile, with packs of 10, 20, 40 or 100 drip bags.

Pantry bags suit everyday use in one place. They come in a shared nitrogen-flushed pack, in 12, 24 or 36 drip bags. This is the only drip bag format with Gadabout decaf and Bunji, our Australian single origin, alongside Wayfarer, Nemophilist and Hodophile.

For milk coffee, choose Hodophile, our milk blend. If you're choosing beans, buy only when you know their brewer, or choose Whole Beans when they have a grinder. Our coffee beans buying guide explains the grind choices so you can match the grind to their brewer.

Can you combine both?

Yes. Give a Sample Box to unwrap and a small gift card so they can reorder their favourite.

That combination lets you choose the first coffee while leaving the next order to them. Write that intention into the card so they know why you've included both.

When should you order for Christmas?

Order physical coffee as early as you can, and allow for both dispatch and delivery before your handover. An emailed gift card doesn't depend on parcel delivery, so it suits a late decision.

Our shipping policy says orders are dispatched within around 2 business days, a little longer during busy periods. After dispatch, most domestic orders arrive within 2 to 8 business days depending on location and carrier; WA, NT and remote areas can take up to 12 business days.

At the time of writing, we deliver Australia-wide, and orders over $80 after discounts get free shipping and a free gift.

Allow time for the parcel to reach you before your own gift handover, too. Those delivery estimates aren't a Christmas arrival promise. If the present needs to travel far or your plans come together late, I'd choose the email option.
